Following his death, he did not perform with the band again, save for the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in 1992. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1997.įreddie Mercury’s death resulted in John Deacon falling to the ground. Deacon has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Deacon’s bass playing is featured on Queen’s many hits, including “Killer Queen,” “ Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Another One Bites the Dust.” He also wrote the band’s biggest hit, “You’re My Best Friend,” which was released in 1976. He made his recording debut with Queen on the band’s self-titled debut album, which was released in 1973. He soon switched to bass after hearing Paul McCartney play the instrument on the Beatles’ song “Paperback Writer.” Deacon joined Queen in 1971, after the band’s original bass player, Tim Staffell, left to pursue a solo career. Deacon began playing the guitar at the age of 12. He was born in Leicester, England, on August 19, 1951. John Deacon is the bass player for the British rock band Queen.
